Are you dreaming of a wedding at Greencrest Manor, the French-inspired estate tucked into the countryside just outside Battle Creek, Michigan? I’ve spent time photographing this property for events, and I can tell you: photos don’t quite prepare you for how the light moves through this place.
I’m Kara Hanes, a wedding photographer based in Grand Rapids who shoots across West Michigan, Detroit, and Chicago. I haven’t had a couple say “I do” at Greencrest yet — but after walking every corner of the estate with a camera in hand, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping for that call.
What Makes Greencrest Manor Worth the Drive
Greencrest Manor is a full-weekend wedding venue, which changes how a photographer should approach the day. Instead of the usual six-hour sprint, weddings here unfold from a Friday champagne arrival through a Sunday farewell brunch — which means there’s time to actually slow down and let real moments happen, instead of rushing from one posed shot to the next.
The estate itself is the kind of setting most Midwest couples don’t expect to find an hour from home: a 1930s Manor House with ivy-covered brick and carved wood interiors, manicured gardens, and open-air verandas that all read more like the French countryside than Battle Creek, Michigan.
Greencrest is also part of the Modern Day Collective family, so the estate’s in-house planning, floral, and design team is already built into the experience. Here’s what stood out to me while I was photographing the grounds — and where I’d want to point your wedding day photos. (I’m sharing the spaces I’ve personally photographed so far; I’ll keep adding to this as I spend more time on the property.)
The Manor House
The Manor House is the heart of the property, and it photographs beautifully in almost any light. The ivy-covered brick and tall windows catch soft, filtered light through the surrounding trees, which makes the front of the house a strong spot for portraits or a first look. From the air, you can also see just how much the estate offers beyond the house itself — manicured patios, mature trees, and gardens that give a wedding-day timeline plenty of beautiful ground to cover.
The New Reception Pavilion
One of the newest additions to the estate is a clear-roofed reception pavilion set beneath a canopy of mature trees, with striped retractable shading, string lighting, and lounge-style seating. It’s a stunning space to photograph: the clear roof lets in soft, diffused daylight during the day and glows warmly once the string lights take over at night, and the surrounding trees keep it shaded and comfortable even on a hot afternoon. It’s an easy space to dress up for a reception, cocktail hour, or lounge area, and the openness to the gardens on all sides means there’s no shortage of natural backdrops just steps away.
