Seniors

The Best Places for Senior Pictures in Grand Rapids and West Michigan

If you’re planning senior pictures in Grand Rapids, one of the first questions is always, “Where should we take them?” Here’s my honest answer as a senior photographer: the location matters a lot less than the light. Golden hour, the last couple of hours before sunset, is what makes senior photos glow, no matter where we are.

That said, the right spot sets the whole vibe of your session. Whether you love florals, the beach, or a colorful downtown, here are my favorite places for senior pictures in Grand Rapids and around West Michigan, with real sessions from each one.

1. Downtown Grand Rapids and the Grand River

Downtown Grand Rapids is perfect if you want your senior photos to feel fun, colorful and a little more city. Think textured brick walls, cute doors, mirrored windows, murals and pretty architecture. The Civic Theatre marquee is one of my favorite pops of color downtown.

Just a few blocks away, the Grand River gives you a completely different look. Walking along the river with the skyline behind you makes for gorgeous, airy portraits, especially as the sun starts to set.

  • Best for: colorful downtown, urban and city-vibe sessions
  • Tip: evenings are best. Buildings shade the streets, which gives you soft, even light

2. Downtown Gardens and Historic Architecture

Grand Rapids has so many beautiful gardens and historic buildings tucked into the city. Ivy-covered walls, grand stone steps and rose bushes in full bloom make it feel like you traveled somewhere far away without leaving downtown. These spots are perfect for dresses, tulle and anything a little dreamy.

  • Best for: nature and floral sessions with an elegant feel
  • Tip: roses and summer perennials are usually at their best from June through August

3. Grand Ravines

Grand Ravines in Jenison, just west of Grand Rapids, is one of my go-to spots. In one park you get tree-lined paths, lush greenery, rustic wooden fences and fields of wildflowers in the summer. It’s easy to change outfits and get completely different looks without driving anywhere else.

  • Best for: nature, floral and rustic sessions
  • Tip: wildflowers usually peak in July and August, depending on rainfall

4. Downtown Holland

If you’re willing to drive about 40 minutes west, downtown Holland is one of the prettiest places in West Michigan for senior pictures. Its parks are filled with colorful flower beds, fountains and a white gazebo, and the historic buildings and columns give you a classic, timeless look.

  • Best for: colorful, floral and classic sessions
  • Tip: Holland is famous for its tulips in May, so spring sessions there are extra special

5. Holland State Park and Big Red

For beach senior pictures, it’s hard to beat Holland State Park. You get dune grass, the pier, rocks along Lake Michigan and Big Red, Holland’s iconic red lighthouse, all in one spot. Pairing a downtown Holland session with a sunset at the beach is one of my favorite combinations.

  • Best for: beach and dune grass sessions
  • Tip: you’ll need a Michigan Recreation Passport to park at state parks, and summer weekends get busy, so weeknights are best

More West Michigan Spots I Love

There are so many other great places for senior pictures around West Michigan. You can see a few more of my favorites in these sessions: Dune Harbor Park in Muskegon, the Thornapple River, South Haven and Allendale and Holland.

How to Choose Your Senior Picture Location

Instead of starting with a specific place, start with the feel you want for your photos. Then we’ll pick the location that fits it best:

  • Rural and rustic: open fields, barns, wooden fences and tall grass
  • Nature and floral: gardens, wildflowers and lots of color
  • Beach and dune grass: docks, piers, dunes and small beach towns
  • Colorful downtown: textured walls, cute doors, murals and pretty architecture
  • Urban and edgy: iron gates, mirrored windows and textured brick

Planning around flowers? Here’s a general guide for West Michigan: tulips bloom in May, poppy farms in early to mid June, lavender in early July, wildflowers in July and August, and sunflowers in August.
